Why Creators Quit!
“Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.” – Thomas Edison
Six months.
That’s all it takes for most podcasters to quit.
It’s not just podcasts—it’s blogs, YouTube channels, small businesses, and any creative venture.
The internet is littered with abandoned dreams.
And that’s the dark side of the content creation business – 95% of creators quit in less than 6 months!
But here’s the irony: Most people give up when success is just around the corner.
They think it’s talent. Or opportunity.
It’s neither.
How it happens!
A friend of mine started a podcast three years ago.
She was passionate, full of ideas, and ready to take on the world.
The topic itself was very unique and when she came to me for guidance, I encouraged her to get started.
We spend a couple of weeks ironing out everything.
I gave her a launch plan and helped her get started.
For the first three months, she recorded weekly episodes, edited them herself, and shared them on social media.
The downloads trickled in, which was normal.
You don’t get a lot of downloads in the beginning.
Part of the reason is because of a faulty launch.
I had given her a blueprint to launch but she didn’t not follow it entirely.
Anyways, she still started and her episodes were getting about a 100 downloads in the first 7 days, which was still decent.
By month four, she was struggling.
Editing felt like a chore.
Finding guests was exhausting. The numbers weren’t growing as fast as she’d hoped.
And by the sixth month, she stopped altogether.
Fast forward to today:
Someone else started a podcast on the exact same topic a couple of months after she quit.
They stuck with it.
And now?
They’re one of the top podcasts in that niche.
Why Creators Quit (and How You Can Avoid It)
It’s not that my friend lacked talent or drive.
It’s that she fell into the three biggest traps of content creators.
Here’s what they are, and how you can stay clear of these:
1. Overwhelm
We live in an age of too much information.
The internet promises “secret tricks” and “ultimate guides.”
You jump from one YouTube video to another, from one course to the next.
You think: “If I just find the right method, it’ll all fall into place.”
Here’s the truth: There is no secret trick.
The fix?
- Focus on the basics.
- Commit to one trusted resource.
- And most importantly, start.
My friend has a resource in me.
Yet, she kept looking for that secret trick to get more downloads and spent hours watching videos after videos.
Something that we don’t realize is – consuming too much of information also burn us out!
2. No Clear Purpose or Direction
When you don’t know your “why,” it’s easy to lose your way.
What’s your goal?
To grow an audience?
To share your expertise?
To build a business?
Without clarity, doubts creep in:
“Why am I doing this?”
“Is it worth it?”
And over a period of time, these doubts will overshadow all of that enthusiasm and confidence with which you started.
It happens to the best of creators out there.
At times, even if you are doing reasonably well, because you are always comparing yourself to the most successful ones.
The fix?
- Write down your reasons for starting.
- Revisit them whenever you feel lost.
Remember – your “WHY” is your North Star.
That is what will guide you, especially when you are lost.
3. Starting Without a Plan
When you learn about something new, it’s tempting to jump in headfirst.
You are all enthusiastic and you just want to get started.
You want to launch big, do everything, and be everywhere.
But trying to do it all leads to burnout.
And burnout?
That’s the beginning of the end.
The fix?
- Create a simple, actionable plan.
- Break your big goals into small, manageable tasks.
- Focus on one thing at a time.
The Path to Consistency
Success doesn’t come from avoiding mistakes.
It comes from learning through them.
Here’s a four-step roadmap to keep you moving forward:
- Learn the basics – Don’t get lost chasing trends. Master the fundamentals of your craft.
- Get crystal clear on your goals – Know your “why.” Write it down. Make it your north star.
- Create a simple plan – What can you do today? This week? This month? Small steps add up.
- Focus on consistency, not perfection – It’s better to release imperfect work than wait for perfection.
Why Success Is Closer Than You Think
The journey to success is very funny.
It is full of twists and turns.
And you don’t even know how long the journey is and at what point will you be meeting success.
Imagine this – You’re digging for gold.
You’ve been at it for hours, days, weeks.
You’re tired. Frustrated. Ready to quit.
But what you don’t know is how far the treasure is.
Maybe just one more swing of the pickaxe would uncover the treasure.
This usually is the point where most people give up.
..right before the breakthrough.
Don’t be most people.
Success is closer than you think.
Keep going.
You’ve got this.
What’s Your Next Step?
- If you’re a podcaster, commit to recording your next episode.
- If you’re a writer, publish that draft sitting in your folder.
- If you’re an entrepreneur, take one small step toward your goal today.
Small steps. Big results.
Let’s keep moving forward..
