Developing a growth mindset:
“Your mindset is the single greatest lever for your success. Everything else flows from it.” – Sahil Bloom
I used to think success was all about skills, hard work, and a bit of luck.
And while those things matter, what I’ve learned over the years is this:
Success starts in the mind.
Not with goals.
Not with strategy.
But with mindset.
That may sound simple, but it’s something most of us were never taught – how to think in a way that helps us grow.
In other words, developing a growth mindset – what it really means, how to train your brain for it, and why it’s the foundation of lasting success.

My Mindset Wasn’t Built for Growth—At First
I was born and raised in a lower-middle-class family.
Everyone around me worked in a stable 9-to-5 job – Government service or private company. That was the formula.
Reliable. Respectable. Safe.
Running a business?
That was seen as a shortcut to failure.
And as I grew up, this belief got wired into me:
“Play it safe. Don’t dream too big. Do what’s expected.”
But deep down, I always had dreams that didn’t fit that script.
(I am sure most of are like that in our late teens and the early twenties)
I wanted more.
Not more money – more meaning, more freedom, more impact.
Because I was seeing what the so-called “safe” looked like.
Long working hours.
Measly paychecks
In fact, I barely got to see my dad except on a Sunday. My dad, who followed the “follow-the-safe” advice!
But, I struggled.
I felt torn between what I wanted and what I was told was “realistic.”
And the noise around me—negativity, pressure, fear—it all made me doubt myself constantly.
The Tiny Habit That Helped Me Think Differently
I had followed the advice and joined a regular 9-5 job.
The hunger to grow helped me grow in my role – on grades, designations and salary!
But I struggled with the many thoughts, ideas and confusion that was paralyzing my brain.
It was after a few years that I stumbled upon Sahil Bloom’s 1-1-1 Journaling technique.
Now, I’ll be honest—before that, I hated the idea of journaling.
I thought it was just glorified diary writing.
But this wasn’t that.
Sahil’s system was simple:
- 1 Win from the day
- 1 Point of tension or something that didn’t go well
- 1 Point of action to improve tomorrow
That’s it.
I started doing it every morning before starting my day.
And slowly, something started to shift.
I was no longer reacting to everything around me.
I was thinking clearer.
I was focusing on what I could control.
I was developing a growth mindset—without even realizing it.
Fixed vs. Growth Mindset Explained
To understand what changed for me, let’s talk about what psychologists call the fixed vs growth mindset—a concept made popular by Dr. Carol Dweck in her book Mindset: The New Psychology of Success (highly recommend this one).
Here’s the basic idea:
- A fixed mindset believes your abilities are set in stone. You’re either smart or you’re not.
- A growth mindset believes you can learn, improve, and grow through effort and strategy.
People with a fixed mindset avoid challenges, fear failure, and give up easily.
People with a growth mindset embrace effort, learn from setbacks, and keep going.
The difference sounds small, but it leads to completely different outcomes in life and business.
How to Train Your Mind for Success
Enough of the why and the what.
Let us look at the how of this entire exercise.
Here are a few practical ways you can start training your mind for success, based on what’s worked for me—and for many others:
Start Journaling (Seriously, Just Try It)
Use the 1-1-1 method I mentioned earlier.
It’s not about writing novels. It’s about building awareness:
What worked? What didn’t? What can you improve?
Over time, you’ll start noticing patterns. And clarity leads to better decisions.
Book rec: The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron – a great guide on morning pages and unlocking creativity through writing.
Change the Questions You Ask Yourself
Instead of:
“Why is this happening to me?”
Try:
“What can I learn from this?”
This one simple shift will rewire how you see problems—and turn them into growth moments.
Book rec: Thinking, Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman – it explores how we think, and how to think better.
Track Your Micro-Wins
Big wins are rare. But tiny wins happen daily—if you pay attention.
Did you write today?
Did you reach out to someone you were nervous to approach?
Did you say no to a distraction?
Track it.
Success is built on stacking those small wins.
Book rec: Atomic Habits by James Clear – perfect if you want to build habits that actually stick.
Expose Yourself to Growth Environments
You become who you surround yourself with—online and offline.
When I was surrounded by people who only talked about “stability” and “playing safe,” my dreams felt silly.
But once I started listening to podcasts, reading books, and following creators with big ideas, my mindset expanded.
Feed your brain stories of people who’ve done what you want to do.
Book rec: Grit by Angela Duckworth – all about passion, perseverance, and why effort often beats talent.
The Psychology of Success Is Ongoing Work
The psychology of success isn’t something you master once and for all.
It’s something you build.
Day by day.
Thought by thought.
Habit by habit.
And developing a growth mindset is the foundation of that.
When you learn to see failure as feedback…
When you view challenges as training grounds…
When you replace “I can’t” with “I’m learning to”…
That’s when things start to shift.
And it doesn’t require a life makeover.
It starts with the small stuff.
Just like my story.
Just like yours.
Remember: It All Starts in Your Mind
You can read every productivity hack.
You can use every planner.
You can set a hundred goals.
But if you don’t train your mind for success, it’s like building a house on sand.
So take this as your sign.
Start journaling.
Start asking better questions.
Start feeding your brain with things that help it grow.
Because when your mindset changes, everything else follows.
Let me ask you this:
What’s one belief about success that you’re ready to let go of—and what will you replace it with?
Hit reply and tell me. I’d love to hear your story..
