Wake up. Scroll my phone. Check emails. Get distracted.

By the time I actually started working, it was already 11 a.m., and half the day felt gone.

I was getting things done, but it always felt rushed, scattered, and reactive.

That’s when I came across a billboard that read —

“Successful people take care of their mornings which then takes care of the day.”

And I wondered: “What do the most successful people do in the morning?”

I decided to dig deeper.

I spent a few hours researching (there was no Perplexity or ChatGPT back then, so the research obviously took a lot of time).

I looked into the morning rituals of highly effective people like Tim Cook (Apple), Oprah Winfrey, Anna Wintour (Vogue), and a few other creators and business leaders.

And what I found completely changed how I start my day.

Here’s what you can learn from them and how to build your own productive morning routine.

What I Learned About Morning Rituals of Highly Effective People

The first thing I noticed was: none of them leave their morning to chance.

  • There’s structure.
  • There’s rhythm.
  • There’s intention.

But the good news?

These routines aren’t about being superhuman. They’re about doing a few simple things well – over and over again.

Let me break down what I discovered, step by step, so you can take what fits and build your own version of the best morning habits for productivity.

Tim Cook starts his day at 3:45 a.m.

Now, I’m not telling you to do that.

But there’s something powerful about waking up before the noise begins.

You get space. You get silence. You get control over how your day starts.

For me, I shifted my wake-up time by just 30 minutes. That tiny change gave me time to breathe, think, and plan—before the pings, emails, and to-do lists came rushing in.

Over a period of time, I changed to a habit of waking up at 5 AM.

Initially it was difficult.

But after a few months, my body acted like a robot. It would automatically get up without an alarm.

And the best part.

The first 90 minutes – 5:00 – 6:30 – is the most productive 90 minutes of my day.

By 6:30, I would leave for my daily badminton game.

Something that I should say at this point – I didn’t make it a compulsion to follow this routine of waking up at 5:00.

There were days when I slept late or, when I just didn’t feel like getting up from the bed.

On those days, I will skip it and it was totally fine!

For me, this proved to be one of the best morning habits for productivity!

Try this:

  • Set your alarm 20–30 minutes earlier than usual. Use that time just for you. No screens. No pressure. Even those few quiet minutes can improve how you feel all day.

Avoid Your Phone for the First 30 Minutes

This one is harder than it sounds.

But almost every single high achiever I researched—including Arianna Huffington—makes this a rule.

They don’t start the day reacting to the world. They start the day on their own terms.

I used to check emails while still in bed. My brain would go from zero to stressed in under 10 seconds.

Now, I leave my phone outside the bedroom and keep a journal by my side instead.

I journal before going to bed and the first thing I do when I get up, is to pick my journal and check the 3 most important activities that I have to do for the day.

The first 90 minutes of my day go into finishing off those activities.

Your phone is often the biggest reason for unproductive sessions. And when you start the day on your phone, you have already lost the day!

This is in fact, one of the best morning routine tips for success, that you will find from most of the top influencers.

Try this:

  • Keep your phone on airplane mode or in another room until your first 30 minutes of the day are over.
  • Use that time to stretch, journal, or just sit in stillness.
  • It’s a simple shift, but it sets a tone of calm and clarity.

Move, Even If It’s Just a Little

Anna Wintour plays tennis every morning at 5:45 a.m.

No, I don’t play tennis. And probably you don’t either.

But what matters isn’t how she moves.

It’s that she moves.

Getting your body moving early in the day wakes up your brain, boosts your mood, and creates energy you can carry into your work.

For me, I started with a 10-minute walk. That’s it. Just a short loop around the neighborhood.

This then transitioned into my habit of playing for 90 minutes everyday.

Try this:

  • Do 10 jumping jacks. Stretch for five minutes. Do a 7-minute YouTube workout.
  • You don’t need a gym or a routine. You just need to move.

And if you do it consistently, it becomes one of the best morning habits for productivity.

Write Down What You Want and What You’re Grateful For

This one came from studying Oprah’s routine and later, creators like Tim Ferriss and Marie Kondo.

They all do some form of reflection and gratitude.

When I started doing this—writing down 3 things I was grateful for, and 3 things I wanted to focus on—it changed how I showed up.

It took less than five minutes. But the mental clarity was worth hours.

And it saved me hours everyday!

Keep it simple. Use the 3×3 format:

  • 3 things you’re grateful for
  • 3 things you want to get done today
  • 3 words to describe how you want to feel

Writing this every morning helps you stay grounded and focused.

And this is one of the easiest ways to create a productive morning routine that sticks.

Feed Your Body With Intention

Some people drink bulletproof coffee. Some eat oatmeal. Some don’t eat at all.

I switched from sugary cereal to a bowl of oats with nuts and banana—and my focus noticeably improved.

  • Pick a short ritual that signals it’s time to start the day. For me, it’s opening my laptop and going through my calendar with a cup of tea in my hand.

Here’s the part where I remind you:

You don’t need a perfect routine.

You don’t need to follow everything I just said.

What you need is a routine that:

  • Starts your day with intention
  • Gives you space to think
  • Helps you feel energized and focused

So, how do you build one?

Step 1: Choose just 2 habits from this list

Don’t try to do it all. Pick two that feel easiest right now.

Step 2: Stick to them for 7 days

Give it one week. Don’t track results—just show up and do the thing.

Step 3: Add one more habit each week

Slowly layer on new actions. Let your routine evolve.

I used to think I wasn’t a “morning person.”
